Chapter Eleven

I lost the werewolf at the next entrance. He strode past the troll at the door with a crooked salute. Unfortunately for me, whatever magic allowed me to pass through the wall also stripped away my cloaking spell.

“You seem lost,” the troll said. “You might want to turn around and go back where you came from.”

“No, I mean to be here. I’m looking for a vampire called Katerina Groome. Is she in there?”

The troll looked me up and down. “You don’t look like someone who would be looking for Katerina.”

I frowned. “Why? Because she’s a vampire?” I swatted a dismissive hand. “I live with a vampire. My best friend’s boyfriend is a vampire. Even my therapist is a vampire. I promise I’m totally okay.”

The troll scrutinized me. “That’s a lot of vampires in your life for a woman who isn’t one. My grandma would say there’s an issue there.”

“Well, I’m sure that your grandma is very wise as all grandmas are, but the multiple vampires in my life are just a coincidence. It isn’t as though I chose them.”

The troll squinted his eyes into slits. “You didn’t choose the one you live with? Or your therapist? Seems to me those are two major life choices that you would want to have I say in.”

I laughed awkwardly. “Yes, I can see how that might be misinterpreted. I mean, technically, I did choose my therapist. It’s only that I was at a loose end and she was the only one with availability at the time.” I paused, realizing how it sounded. “But I absolutely love her now. She’s great. Highly recommended.”

The troll seemed unimpressed. “Thou doth protest too much. Do you know that expression?”

“It’s not so much an expression as a quote from a Shakespeare play, but I take your point.”

“What about that vampire you live with?” the troll asked. He angled his head toward my stomach. “That his?”

“Oh, no. This baby isn’t the vampire’s. The father is an angel.”

The troll pulled a face. “So you live with a vampire, but the father of your child is an angel? Lady, I gotta hand it to you. You’ve made some interesting life choices.”

I fidgeted, not only because I was nervous, but because my bladder was about to explode. “Would you mind ever so much pointing me in the direction of Katerina Groome because I really need the restroom.” In an effort to retain my dignity, I stopped just short of doing a jig.

“Yeah, sure. If you take this door behind me and go all the way to the end of the hall, you’ll come to a blue door. There’ll be a sign on it that tells you to keep out. Ignore that. You just keep going and you’ll find the bathroom as well as Katerina.”

I gave him a grateful smile. “Thank you, Mr. Troll. I really appreciate your help.”

He smiled, revealing a set of perfectly square albeit yellow teeth. “The name’s Newton,” he said. “And if things don’t work out with the
